WORKING DEFINITIONS RELATED TO THE SUMMER LEARNING 2018 RUBRIC
- Well-trained: Training for the skills, knowledge and experience to equip instructors to impart intentional literacy instruction to young children. In beginning level programs, instructors have received training by certified teachers with literacy learning credentials, as documented by a test to verify satisfactory completion. In developing programs, (in addition to what is provided in beginning level programs) instructors receive coaching by certified teachers with literacy learning credentials. In accomplished programs, in addition to coaching, instructors receive supervision by certified teachers with literacy learning credentials. In exemplary programs, instructors are certified teachers with literacy learning credentials.
- Ongoing: specifically required periodic continuing education in literacy learning. In beginning and developing level programs, ongoing means annually. In accomplished programs, ongoing means semi-annually. In exemplary programs, ongoing means quarterly or more frequently.
- Professional Development: a program of literacy instruction delivered through continuing education workshops designed to help educators improve their professional knowledge, competence, skill and effectiveness, incorporating an evaluative stage.
- Parent Communication: verbal communication, sometimes supported by technology, between instructors and parents to increase the learning of both parties about the wide variety of needs of young children in their care. During summer literacy learning programs, these communications in beginning level programs take place at the start and end of the program. In developing and accomplished programs, these communications take place weekly. In exemplary programs, relevant information is shared with academic year teachers as well.
- Classroom Management: Classroom management is a term teachers use to describe the process of ensuring that classroom lessons run smoothly without disruptive behavior from students compromising the delivery of instruction. Classroom management may also refer to the ability of instructors to organize students into the appropriate learning modalities/environments (for example, phonemic instruction, silent reading, writing) during a single literacy learning instructional session.
- Small Group: Teacher: student ratio or 1:8 or fewer
- Book Choices: Book choices may be made by students, instructors or parents depending on the learning objective.
