The challenges our children face on the road to academic recovery will require swift action and sustainable strategies for the long-haul.
Swift Action Strategies
Read Fort Worth is activating strategies now that support children returning to school this Fall.
Summer Porch Visits:
Read Fort Worth is mobilizing hundreds of community partners to visit the homes of 1,000 students whom our data identifies could most benefit from a home visit. Porch visit teams include organizations that are familiar to the family and all families will receive a phone call asking if we can visit their home. We listened to what parents and students need. Porch visits are responsive to these needs:
Children will receive instructional materials to practice back-to-school learning skills
Parents will receive the basic needs supports that equip them for success
Families will receive social-emotional and mental health supports
Summer Scholars Collaborative:
Read Fort Worth collaborates with 17 community partners to provide evidence-based, daily literacy instruction at 145+ sites this summer. Community partners in Read Fort Worth’s Summer Scholars Collaborative receive data-informed tools and support, including:
Best practice rubric grounded in evidence-based best practices from RAND and The Annie E. Casey Foundation
Training of Literacy Support Specialists who provide literacy instruction and assessment for students at each summer site
Literacy assessments at the beginning and end of programs to inform instruction and monitor student growth
Data analysis correlating Summer Scholars Collaborative participation with literacy metrics at Fort Worth ISD
Continuous feedback loops during monthly community partner meetings
Back to School Literacy Checklists for Each Grade:
Read Fort Worth wants all children to return to school with the literacy skills necessary to start the year with success. Checklists with literacy skills specific to each grade level were co-developed with Fort Worth ISD so students return to classrooms ready to learn.
Sustainable Strategies for the Long-Haul
Read Fort Worth is implementing systems that can evolve as data continues to emerge.
Education Vision Paper co-authored by Read Fort Worth and Texas Christian University
The paper will define the academic consequences of COVID-19 to children across Tarrant County and outline a vision for academic recovery.
Coalition of Education Champions:
Read Fort Worth is galvanizing community partners to join us in a united voice of support for education issues that are critical for our children.
